What is HIP 114254
Beneath the silent atelier of Sculptor, a modern constellation outlined by Lacaille, shines this yellow G-type star, about 270 light-years distant. Its light departed around 1755, when Lisbon was rebuilding after the devastating earthquake and Diderot was publishing new volumes of the Encyclopédie. Slightly more luminous than the Sun, it carries the warmth of an evolved G. It now reaches us as a luminous postcard from the mid-eighteenth century.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 114254 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
