What is HIP 12239
In the recognisable W of Cassiopeia glows an orange K-class star, whose light set out some 924 years ago, when Christian knights reached Jerusalem during the First Crusade. It is an aged giant, cool at the surface yet swollen to sizes that would dwarf the Sun, with calm atmospheres where delicate dusts condense.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 12239 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
