Eta Horologium
What is Eta Horologium
Eta Horologii is a tight binary some 149 light-years away: two main-sequence stars —a blue-white A6 V and a yellower F0 V companion— circle each other every three years on a slightly eccentric orbit, separated in projection by barely 3.6 astronomical units. A pair almost in contact, decoded by decades of astrometry above the small southern Clock.
Where it is and when to see it
Eta Horologium lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
