What is Mu Hydrus
Mu Hydri is a yellow G-type star shining in the Lesser Water Snake, that southern serpent drawn by Petrus Plancius in the 16th century from Dutch navigators' logs. At 284 light-years, it glows with a familiar solar tone: an almost recognizable star lost in a stretch of sky that for millennia lay beyond the reach of the Mediterranean world.
Where it is and when to see it
Mu Hydrus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
