What is Nu Hydrus
ν Hydri shines within the Male Hydra, a southern constellation drawn by Dutch navigators at the end of the 16th century, not far from the celestial South Pole. An orange K-type giant some 339 light-years away, her warm light glows over a region of the sky that never rises above European horizons.
Where it is and when to see it
Nu Hydrus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
