Pi 2 Grus
What is Pi 2 Grus
π² Gruis shines yellow-white at 130 light-years, in the southern Crane whose silhouette Dutch navigators traced over the sky of the East Indies. An F-class star, slightly hotter and more luminous than the Sun, it lies close to its companion π¹ Gruis on the sky without being gravitationally bound to it — a closeness that is only apparent, born of our perspective from the northern side of the Galaxy.
Where it is and when to see it
Pi 2 Grus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
