What is Pi 2 Grus

π² Gruis shines yellow-white at 130 light-years, in the southern Crane whose silhouette Dutch navigators traced over the sky of the East Indies. An F-class star, slightly hotter and more luminous than the Sun, it lies close to its companion π¹ Gruis on the sky without being gravitationally bound to it — a closeness that is only apparent, born of our perspective from the northern side of the Galaxy.

Where it is and when to see it

Pi 2 Grus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never rises above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 3° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 78° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 44° N.

It ranks no. 27 in brightness among the 39 stars of Grus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Alnair, the brightest: it lies about 3° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
