69 Ceti is a red M-type giant cast more than a thousand light-years away, set within the vast figure of the Sea Monster. Its light —cool and deeply orange through binoculars— left the star around the tenth century, long before the first modern ocean voyages. Cetus is a wide, dim constellation, and tracking this giant takes patience, far from any famous asterism, in a transitional patch of the autumn sky.
Where it is and when to see it
69 Ceti lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
