Variable starIts story
A white A-type star shines faintly within the rich starfields of Cygnus, hotter and more luminous than the Sun, its brightness wavering in slow, almost imperceptible pulsations. Its light has been travelling for more than two thousand years, beginning when Eratosthenes was measuring the circumference of the Earth from the shadows in two Egyptian wells. After 2,039 light-years, that pale, breathing glow arrives tonight as a quiet message from the dawn of measurement itself.
