What is Albali

Albali, «the swallower» in Arabic, was part of the old asterism of camels drinking from the river of Aquarius. It is a white star 208 light-years away, modest to the naked eye but perfectly recognisable once you know its place in the autumn sky. Its light set out during the Enlightenment, when the first modern star catalogues were beginning to order the firmament one star at a time.

Where it is and when to see it

Albali lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August, when it culminates around midnight.

  • From London it culminates about 29° above the horizon.
  • From New York it culminates about 40° above the horizon.
  • From Sydney it culminates about 66° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 81° N.

It ranks no. 7 in brightness among the 99 stars of Aquarius in our catalogue. To find it, start from Sadalsuud, the brightest: it lies about 12° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).

The light you see today left it about 210 years ago.
