What is HIP 100437
Right in Cygnus, the swan opening its wings across the Milky Way, it shines orange about 405 light years away. Its light set out around 1621, when Galileo was defending his telescopic observations and Cervantes had just marked the golden age of Spanish literature. A K-type star, cooler than the Sun, carrying that warm and serene signature that seems to belong to a late-summer evening. It crosses the galactic river of light with a faithful, almost domestic glow.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 100437 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
