Variable starIts story
71 Draconis is an Algol-type variable: a system in which two stars eclipse one another periodically from our line of sight, so the pair appears to pulse on a regular schedule. Catalogued as DE Draconis, it shines at 378 light-years within Draco, the celestial serpent coiled around the northern pole that once guided navigators through Thuban, its ancient pole star.
