What is 35 Cygni

35 Cygni is a yellow supergiant of spectral type F6Ib, a massive star that has burned through its core hydrogen and now fuses heavier elements in an unstable equilibrium. It lies about 3,300 light-years away —its light takes longer than all of recorded history to reach us— and belongs to a spectroscopic binary. It glows in the neck of the Swan, crossing the luminous band of the northern Milky Way.

35 Cygni lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 73° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 84° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 21° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 55° S.
