What is 15 Sagitta
15 Sagittae lies just 58 light-years away —a yellow star, a Sun analog, with 1.08 solar masses and a surface at 5,883 K. In January 2002, a team using adaptive optics on the Gemini North and Keck telescopes captured a direct image of a substellar companion around it: a brown dwarf between 55 and 78 Jupiter masses, separated from the star by less than the Sun-Uranus distance —the smallest direct-imaging separation seen at the time—.
Where it is and when to see it
15 Sagitta lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
