Variable starIts story
19 Cygni is a variable giant and visual double about 693 light-years away, deep in the body of the Swan. Its pair is split only by large-aperture telescopes; to the naked eye it looks like a single ruddy dot, and only under truly dark skies. It is closing in on the Sun at 39 km/s, while its brightness drifts softly around magnitude 5.2 —far too faint for any modern city.
