What is 71 Cygni
71 Cygni shines with the warm orange tone of K-type stars, in the constellation of the Swan that crosses the summer sky along the bright trail of the Milky Way. It lies some two hundred light-years away, close enough for its colour to be appreciated through binoculars. Its light departed two centuries ago, in the midst of the early industrial revolutions, and now reaches us as a serene point amid the bright knots of Cygnus.
Where it is and when to see it
71 Cygni lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
