What is 9 Cygni
9 Cygni is a white A-type star in Cygnus, the great northern cross the Romans pictured in mid-flight along the Milky Way. At 559 light-years away, it shares sky with some of the densest and most worked regions of the galaxy. Its light, having left the photosphere while Gutenberg was beginning to print sheets in Mainz, now arrives wrapped in a stellar field that needs a dark night to reveal itself in full splendour.
Where it is and when to see it
9 Cygni lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
