53 Cassiopeiae is a hot blue B-type star more than 1,700 light-years away, set inside the stellar W of Cassiopeia. Despite that vast distance it reaches magnitude 5.59 thanks to a very high intrinsic luminosity, characteristic of massive stars of its class. Cassiopeia, which never sets at northern mid-latitudes, holds its zigzag silhouette between the pole and the Milky Way, where this blue giant sinks into the background river of stars.
Where it is and when to see it
53 Cassiopeiae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
