What is Pi Draco

π Draconis is a white star coiled in the tail of the Dragon, the celestial serpent that surrounds the north pole without touching it. Its A type betrays a relatively young, hot star still in its prime. The constellation Draco was for centuries the guardian of the ancient pole: five thousand years ago Thuban —not far away in the sky— marked true north for the builders of the pyramids.

Where it is and when to see it

Pi Draco lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
