18 Aquilae is a variable blue B-type star that pulses quietly in the Eagle, not far from Altair. Its surface burns at temperatures well above the Sun's, lending it the blue-white tint typical of massive, youthful stars. Some 698 light-years away, its light departed in the mid-fourteenth century, crossing space as Europe was only beginning to recover from the Black Death.
Where it is and when to see it
18 Aquilae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
