Its light set out around 1550, in the heart of the early modern age, when Mercator was publishing his first maps and reinventing European cartography. Far colder than the Sun yet immeasurably larger, this crimson giant pulses in the southern silence, betraying the inner tremors of a star that has already burned through most of its fuel.
