What is Nu 2 Sagittarii

Nu-2 Sagittarii rests on the bow of the Archer, about 274 light-years away, in a region of the sky where the Milky Way thickens into gold toward the centre of the galaxy. It is an orange K-type giant, a colour cousin of Arcturus though far more distant. Its warm light stands out among the stellar mists of Sagittarius, a constellation Mesopotamian peoples already identified more than three thousand years ago as a hunter aiming at the very heart of our galaxy — without knowing they were right.

Where it is and when to see it

Nu 2 Sagittarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 16° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 27° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 79° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 67° N.

It ranks no. 41 in brightness among the 117 stars of Sagittarius in our catalogue. To find it, start from Kaus Australis, the brightest: it lies about 14° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
