What is 1 Sagittarii
1 Sagittarii is an orange K-type giant burning 256 light-years away, in one of the densest regions of the sky: Sagittarius, where our gaze plunges straight toward the centre of the Milky Way. Its warm hue blends with the dusty backdrop of the galactic bulge. An evolved star, cooler than the Sun yet vastly larger, it is a late furnace in the middle of a river of stars.
Where it is and when to see it
1 Sagittarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
