What is 50 Draco
50 Draconis winds with the Dragon around the celestial north pole, in a region no horizon ever erases from European latitudes. It is a white A-type star whose pure light travels 280 years before reaching us. It set out when Peter the Great was modernising Russia, and now offers itself as a fine metallic point to the patient binocular, set along the back of the mythical beast.
Where it is and when to see it
50 Draco lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
