Within northern Triangulum burns a rare red M-type giant 458 light years away. Its light set out when Spanish conquistadors were falling upon Tenochtitlan and an entire world was shifting on its axis. Far cooler than the Sun yet enormous, it pours out a reddish glow that the eye reads as embers —the color of stars that have already lived through nearly all their biography—.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 9132 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
