What is HIP 90842

Far away, within the small Corona Australis curled at the feet of Sagittarius, shines an orange K-type star, cooler and ruddier than the Sun. Its light needs nearly 1,100 years to cross the void: what we see today departed around the year 925, when the Christian kingdoms of the northern Iberian Peninsula —Asturias, León, Pamplona— were beginning to redraw the political map of medieval Hispania. A light born before Spain existed as a name.

HIP 90842 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
