74 Ophiuchi is a G8III giant near the boundary with Serpens Cauda, regarded as a probable binary system. Its primary, now on the horizontal branch, fuses helium in its core and has grown to ten and a half solar radii, radiating 66 times the Sun's luminosity at an effective temperature of 5,073 K. It is roughly 1.7 billion years old and reaches us from 260 light-years away.
