What is 58 Ophiuchi
58 Ophiuchi is an F-type star only 57.6 light-years away, among the nearest in its constellation. Hotter and whiter than the Sun, its light set out around 1968, during the height of the space race. Ophiuchus —the serpent-bearer— is an immense figure coiled across the celestial equator, and this star, faint to the unaided eye, sits in one of its quieter, darker reaches.
Where it is and when to see it
58 Ophiuchi lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
