What is HIP 89587
Serpens is the only constellation split in two by another —Ophiuchus divides it—, and among its scales shines this yellow G-class star 337 light-years away. When its light broke free, the English colonies on the eastern coast of America were beginning to take shape and Newton was publishing his Principia Mathematica. A sister of the Sun forever coiled into the snake that crosses the summer sky.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 89587 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
