16 Sagittarii is a fiercely hot blue multiple system, a candidate quadruple star with at least one inner spectroscopic binary on a roughly thirteen-day orbit. Together with its neighbour 15 Sgr it ionises a vast region of hydrogen on the rim of a molecular cloud, sculpting the gas around it. It lies so far that modern measurements place it thousands of light-years out, towards the galactic centre.
Where it is and when to see it
16 Sagittarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
