What is 99 Herculis
99 Herculis is one of the closest stars in the Hercules catalogue: barely 51 light-years away, near enough that a beam of light could complete the trip within a single human life. It is a yellow-white F-type star, a touch hotter and brighter than the Sun. The glow that paints it now in the sky was born around 1975 —the era of Apollo-Soyuz— and has watched the whole modern space age unfold along its way.
Where it is and when to see it
99 Herculis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
