What is HIP 88684
Along the curves of Serpens, the serpent, shines an orange K-type star about 120 light-years away. Its light set out around 1906, the year San Francisco was leveled by an earthquake and modern seismographs were born in its shadow. Cooler than the Sun, its coppery tone recalls old gold, beating slowly among the stellar scales.

HIP 88684 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
