What is HIP 88038
In the constellation Sagittarius, pointing toward the heart of our galaxy, shines this yellow G-type star, a distant sister of the Sun lying nearly four hundred light years away. Its light departed around 1629, during the Spanish Golden Age, the same year Velázquez set out on his first journey to Italy to study the great Venetian masters. Warm and golden like our own star, it shines surrounded by the dense stellar throng adorning the galactic river.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 88038 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
