Theta Herculis is a luminous orange giant of type K burning some 753 light-years away in the figure of the kneeling hero. At that distance, the mere fact that the naked eye still catches it speaks of overwhelming power: it shines hundreds of times brighter than the Sun. Its faintly irregular pulse, characteristic of evolved giants, betrays a star already moving into the final acts of its existence.
Where it is and when to see it
Theta Herculis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
