In Scorpius, 799 light years away, this orange K-type star shines at magnitude 5.98. Its light set out around 1227, the year of the death of Genghis Khan on the Central Asian steppes. Scorpius is one of the densest and most spectacular regions of the summer sky, and among its most famous stars slip bodies like this one, mature giants of warm glow, a silent counterpoint to the intense red of the scorpion's head.
