Gamma Arae burns more than eleven hundred light-years away, a blue B-type supergiant whose surface temperature defies easy comparison. It marks a corner of the southern Altar, that small constellation the ancients tucked beside Scorpius for the sacrifice of myths. Its intense, cold-tinted glow comes from a star living fast and bound to die young, leaving behind the radiance we now see.
Where it is and when to see it
Gamma Ara lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
