In the open claws of Scorpius shines a yellow-white sun, an F-type star whose light crossed 255 years of night to touch our eyes. When it set out, the French encyclopaedists were drafting the volumes that would reshape European culture. Slightly hotter and larger than our Sun, it offers a clear and serene light, a fine flash between the claws of a scorpion that seems to capture forever the hunter Orion in classical myth.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 83896 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
