What is Larawag

Larawag glows orange at the heart of Scorpius, only 63.7 light-years away. A class-K star, cooler and older than the Sun, it ranks among the few stellar neighbours we see shining inside such a dramatic constellation. Its name comes from the Wardaman people of northern Australia, who regarded it as a guide for hunters and fishermen, a rare flash of indigenous astronomy among the Greek and Arabic names that populate the night sky.

Where it is and when to see it

Larawag lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 4° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 15° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 90° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 56° N.

It ranks no. 5 in brightness among the 104 stars of Scorpius in our catalogue. To find it, start from Antares, the brightest: it lies about 9° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
