Kap
Variable starIts story
Kappa Scorpii marks the stinger of the Scorpion, next to its bright neighbour Shaula. It is a vast blue-white giant —seventeen times the Sun's mass— pulsating every four and a half hours, a Beta Cephei variable whose surface rises and falls in dizzying cycles. Its cold, knife-edged light travelled almost five centuries before reaching our eyes.
