A distant inhabitant of Scorpius, more than two thousand seven hundred light-years away, this B-type blue supergiant varies its brightness softly, as if breathing. Its light departed when Tutankhamun still reigned over New Kingdom Egypt, in the 14th century BCE. Hot and variable, it pulses at the tip of the sting with a cadence no human eye can grasp in a single night.

HIP 80945 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
