What is HIP 80337

Surprisingly close at just 41.7 light-years, this Sun-like yellow star hides in the sting of Scorpius. The light now crossing the atmosphere left it around the early 1980s, when Voyager was flying past Saturn and Pac-Man was invading the arcades. A discreet neighbour, almost an echo of our own Sun.

HIP 80337 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
