Delta¹ Apodis is a cool red M-type giant, one of the few notable lights of the Bird of Paradise, a southern constellation drawn in the sixteenth century from the charts of Dutch navigators. Its light, slightly variable as is common with large cool stars, has travelled more than 762 years before reaching us. It is accompanied in the sky by Delta² Apodis, an optical pair that the eye sees joined but distance keeps apart.
Where it is and when to see it
Delta 1 Apus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
