43 Cassiopeiae is a remarkable oddity: a chemically peculiar A0 star, rich in silicon and strontium, classed as an Alpha² Canum Venaticorum variable. Its intense magnetic field sorts elements into surface bands, and as it rotates it shows different chemical mixes. At 389 light-years, it drifts slightly around magnitude 5.57 inside Cassiopeia's W, a hidden jewel among the stars that trace the mythical queen.
Where it is and when to see it
43 Cassiopeiae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
