What is Pi Sculptor

Pi Sculptoris inhabits the Sculptor constellation, a southern panel introduced by Lacaille to honor the artist's workshop. It is an orange K-type giant some 215 light-years away —an aged star whose envelope has expanded after exhausting its central hydrogen. It shines in a region of sky where the Milky Way yields its density to extragalactic fields of great scientific interest.

Where it is and when to see it

Pi Sculptor lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
