Psi Scorpii
What is Psi Scorpii
Psi Scorpii is a white main-sequence star with a hidden companion that eluded astronomers for decades. The hint of its binary nature, planted by the Hipparcos satellite, was only confirmed in 2025, when the GRAVITY instrument at the VLTI finally imaged the partner: 3.4 astronomical units away, with a ten-year orbit. It shines at 156 light-years, on the curved spine of the Scorpion.
Where it is and when to see it
Psi Scorpii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
