What is HIP 7921

In Hydrus, that small serpent of the deep southern sky almost invisible from Europe, burns an orange giant 364 light-years away. Its light departed around 1660, when the Royal Society of London was being founded and science was beginning to organize itself as a collective enterprise. This K ember has travelled three and a half centuries to bear silent witness to what those first scientists began.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 7921 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never rises above the horizon.
From New York it never rises above the horizon.
From Sydney it never sets and culminates about 63° up.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 29° N.

It ranks no. 16 in brightness among the 20 stars of Hydrus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Beta Hydrus, the brightest: it lies about 18° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
