Pi-1 Hydri is a red M-type giant at more than seven hundred and seventy light-years in the Male Water Snake, that small southern serpent added to the sky by Dutch navigators near the south pole. Its deep reddish tone betrays a vast, cool atmosphere already in the final phases of its evolution. A slow ember in a corner of the sky where almost no other legends touch it.
Where it is and when to see it
Pi 1 Hydrus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
