Omega-1 Scorpii belongs to the young Sco-Cen complex, the closest stellar association to Earth, a brotherhood of blue suns born almost simultaneously from the same cloud of gas. It is a hot B-type star whose intensely blue light takes some 470 years to reach us. Alongside its visual twin Omega-2, it forms a pair that splits cleanly in binoculars, two distinct flames bound to the same cosmic cradle and still deep in stellar adolescence.
Where it is and when to see it
Omega 1 Scorpii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
