What is Delta Norma

Delta Normae inhabits one of the youngest and most modest constellations in the sky, the Carpenter's Square, drawn by the French astronomer Lacaille in the eighteenth century to fill the gaps of the southern heavens. It is a white A-type star lying 122 light-years away, a young and hot body whose light cuts through the southern band of the Milky Way. Its clean brilliance stands out amid the dust of a densely seeded firmament, deep in the luminous river of the galaxy.

Where it is and when to see it

Delta Norma lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never rises above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 4° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 79° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 45° N.

It ranks no. 5 in brightness among the 26 stars of Norma in our catalogue. To find it, start from Gamma 2 Norma, the brightest: it lies about 5° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
