Gamma1 Normae is an extraordinarily luminous F-type star, set some 1,470 light-years away inside the small constellation of the carpenter's rule. Its light, still perceptible to the naked eye despite the enormous distance, reveals a star vastly brighter than the Sun; what we see today left its surface centuries before the first circumnavigation of the globe.
Where it is and when to see it
Gamma 1 Norma lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
